Thermal Physics of Roll-to-Roll Manufacturing

The roll-to-roll (R2R) manufacturing team focuses on understanding the science behind manufacturing processes, with an emphasis on applying particle / liquid mixtures as surface coatings. This approach is used in manufacturing many products, including electrodes for batteries, fuel cells, and electrolyzers. These electrode products are vital to a clean energy economy and of particular interest within Berkeley Lab's Energy Technologies Area, which has a long and distinguished history of electrochemical research.

Our team is using a combination of novel experiments and mathematical modeling to connect component-level information and process decisions to final product characteristics. As part of this effort, we are developing computer-automated setups to conduct readily reproducible mixing and drying experiments that use a variety of instruments available at Berkeley Lab. This project is in collaboration with Vince Battaglia and is funded by DOE's Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO).
